Multiplayer
![]() |
This article or section contains information that is out-of-date.
|
Multiplayer co-op functionality exists within Astroneer for up to 4 players if playing Co-op on your device ( Listen Server ), and up to 8 players with a dedicated headless server which has the option for Cross-Play ( Multi platform ) functionality enabled.
Be aware that:
- Playing in multiplayer mode requires all players connecting to be using the exact same version of the game.
- The host of the game may experience increased performance issues due to their machine having to process a great deal more information.
- Unlocked progress achievements/rewards are not shared with people that join in after it's been completed.
- People joining your game will have to be friended on your platform.
- One player needs to start a game, just like a solo game and be outside of their shelter for a friend to join.
Platforms
Steam Users
Steam users can only join co-op games with people friended on Steam. It's best to use the Steam client to invite or join friends.
Xbox & Windows 10 Crossplay
To invite another player to your game, you have in to invite them to your game through the Xbox party feature on either the Windows Xbox app or Xbox.
Once they accept the invite it will redirect them to your game. They will be able to tell if they are connected once they see a little house icon on the planet.
Playstation 4/5
Playstation 4/5 users can only join co-op games with people friended on their device, but can play with Steam users.
Nintendo Switch
Nintendo Switch is the newest platform and offers local wireless co-op or Internet co-op with other Switch friends. Switch has no other option for Cross-Play with other platforms.
Dedicated Servers
Dedicated Servers are available for those wishing to play together via Cross-Play with up to 8 players. Depending on the platform you play on, and the platform of the person you want to play with, there are some different options avaliable.
Self Hosting
Self Hosting is where you setup your own service and self host on your own computer or a rented solution such as a dedicated server or VPS, this is self-managed and often rather complex to manage and setup.
For steam you would use steamcmd to download the server tool to host your server, there is linux and windows distros available for this. Self hosting only supports PC ( Steam/Epic store versions and PS4 crossplay, not Microsoft software and Xbox. )
Astroneer Game Server Providers
There are various different game server providers available for Astroneers, please take notice that there are two different versions as crossplay is not universal. The Steam, Epic Games and PS4 Versions are crossplay together but do not crossplay with Microsoft Store/Xbox/Switch versions.
| Provider Name | Locations | Versions/Platforms |
|---|---|---|
| Citadel Servers | USA, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia | Steam, Epic, Playstation 4 |
| GPortal | USA, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia | Steam, Epic, Playstation 4 or Microsoft Store/Xbox |
| Nitrado | USA, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia | Steam, Epic, Playstation 4 or Microsoft Store/Xbox |
- Nintendo Switch has no option for dedicated servers and is a separate platform.
