Storms are a hazard, reintroduced as part of the Astroneer: Glitchwalkers expansion. The provide a challenge to players to overcome, requiring the use of a D-Cipher and Storm Data to increase storm protection.

Storms

There are two variation of storms in Astroneer. The first being Glitched Storms that appear across the original 7 planets. These storms provide the player an opportunity to gather Storm Data that can be used in a Research Chamber to obtain Bytes.

The other variation of storms are Hacked Storms that only appear on Aeoluz. These storms provide a harder challenge and require the player to obtain storm protection to be able to progress through the story of the Glitchwalkers.

Mechanics

For both Hacked and Glitched Storms, they share most of the same mechanics, with a couple of differences. Mainly, both storms will hack a player over time, with an icon that fills in to show the time left until the player is fully hacked and begins to suffocate. The time to suffocate depends on the storm type, and other factors. Both storms contain hotspots that give players Storm Data when using a RUBY, however Hacked Storms have unique storm data per storm type on Aeoluz.

Hacked Storms

Hacked Storms provide a challenge to the player, appearing in fixed locations on Aeoluz, and initially allowing only a short time inside before the player is threatened with suffocation and impending death. Obtaining Storm Data and using them on a D-Cipher will increase the players storm protection with each level completed. Higher levels of storm protection allows for longer trips into the hacked storms.

Storm Data may be obtained by taking a RUBY into a hotspot, a swirl of glowing energy within the storm, and allowing the data to generate. RUBY must be placed on a platform or a vehicle, and consumes power to generate storm data. Hotspots in hacked storms will move around, requiring the player to move RUBY around often until enough storm data has been obtained.

Inside of the Hacked storms is an area of which the player cannot be hacked. In this inner area of the storm is a gateway Engine This gateway Engine is different than the other gateway engines located outside of the DLC. In here you are first required to place the Counterhack Key corresponding to the storm on the altar. Once this is done a puzzle will appear similar to the vaults But with multiple Gateway Shard instead. Once all the Gateway Shards have been put into the right place in the right orientation, The player can power the Gateway engine like normal. Every gateway engine on Aeoluz only requires 5 U/s. Once the gateway engine is activated the player can warp to the other gateway engines like normal using the odd Stone

Glitched Storms

Glitched Storms still provide a challenge, however there is no storm protection needed. Players can stay in glitched storms for a minute before being hacked and suffering from suffocation. Hotspots and RUBY are still used to obtain Storm Data, however it is only used to obtain Bytes, after completing the mission to unlock the portal to access Aeoluz.

Glitched Storms will move around the planets, unlike the Hacked Storms, with various spots they will switch between randomly at regular intervals, based on the planet the storm is on. Storms may respawn at the same spot that one just dissipated from.
